USR Site now shows V.92 upgrade available for this modem.

CAUTION :
Since the modem is a controller-based modem, any failure of the flash process may destroy modem;

There is no guarantee that you will get better performance with the upgrade - in fact, you may get poorer performance, or have new connectivity problems.

USR provides no way to go back to the old V.90 firmware if you have a problem

Richard

Do not apply the upgrade! I will repeat this again.

DO NOT APPLY THE UPGRADE.

It seems that some joker at USR forgot to mention that after you've reset your computer you will be asked to install new drivers which aren't available. It will detect a new PCI Serial Device, which is the modem but unfortunately the old drivers no longer work. I've checked the directory where Controlcenter is installed and no luck.

I have emailed tech support about this blunder.

I am fortunate enough that I have a back-up modem and is able to relay this information.

Can anybody else verify this? Or am I in error?

hey is there a difference between the 5610 and the 5610A? Does the 3CP5610 actually exist? The sticker on my modem states that it is a 5610. The Control center does not identify my modem a valid US Robotics modem, but in the controle Panel it is listed as a US Robotics product. Whats wrong? You think its the Firmware?

I tried those drivers out and no luck. They are for a specific model. I don't know how to modify them so they work. I'll wait.

USR has received my email and is looking into it. I should have all the gory details soon. Stay tuned.

You are not alone fred. I also just updated my 3cp5610a and successfully used it for a few hours but when I rebooted the computer found a new PCI Serial Controller and no amount of conjolling(sp?) will get any drivers from usr to work.

Thanks Bob!

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about putting PNP code into an .inf file neither does most of the general public.

I wonder how many people have been affected by this, plenty of people don't know about this forum.

It's pretty sad if you ask me.

Don't know if Mr. Miner in that post would mind or not but he did offer a modified .inf file, it just didn't get posted in the comp.dcom.modems newsgroup because it's not a binary newsgroup and he may be kind enough to email it to you.

I have the 3CP5610A and applied the V.92 upgrade last night without any problems. And I reset the machine at least 4 or 5 times which included shutting it off twice. I am running WinXP and pretty happy with the performance of the modem after the upgrade. Went from 180-200 pings to my machine at work on a T1 to 120-140 and connection time is about 2/3 the previous time. BTW my ISP does not have v.92 setup yet so I know that I am not getting any V.92 enhancements on their end. So the only thing I can summize is USR made some other changes to the modem as well with this firmware upgrade.

The driver problem is inherent in Win98 SE. I forgot to mention it. Sorry.

I haven't checked it yet in other OS's.

Perhaps it will work in Windows 2000?

Well if anyone can get a copy of that "hacked" inf file for the 3cp5610a from Darren Miner or knows of some location one can aquire it or if they have it or anything.

Someone put it somewhere people can get at it.

Please.

"I think you can find the driver for 56kFaxmodem (cod prod xx5630xx)here:

These drivers do work. Even though the inf file for the external model of the US Robotics modem, you could force feed the hardware the drivers and will operate the 5610A Just fine.

The procedure is simple. When the computer recognizes a new serial controler do not do an automatic search the drivers. Instead specify the location and then choose the second option. Then a list of different types of hardware will show up. Choose modem and then browse to the location of the .inf file. This will then yield a USR modem device in the selection list. Choose this modem and then you will get a warning message informing you that the drivers were not specifically written for your hardware. Click to continue any ways and then it's done. Make sure you change your dial up networking options to use this modem. You will not be able to controle center or ICN (internet call notification) but who care right now. I was able to connect at 52,222 using this inf. file and this method of installation. It's temporary, but better than nothing. excuse me for any mistakes, but I am at my lunch at work doing this from memory. Good luck!

Ok, I understand that those drivers may or may not work. Thanks again. But...

Let's face it, it is only a band-aid solution. It still doesn't solve the main issue. I'm not doing this just for myself but for the others who have been isolated. The average 'joe' doesn't know that he can download the Sportster driver and get results. USR has sold countless numbers of these devices, there must be plenty of people affected by this.

It is unacceptable in my eyes and to most people, I thought I was clear on this?

I haven't received any reply from USR, go figure!

The 'Crusade' continues...

Ok, USR has finally put a link up to the driver that was posted by devonx.

About time.

Thanks again, devonx.
