Don't thank me. Thank Darren Miner the dcom.comp.modems poster that posted the original hacked 3com3cpcicm.inf file that he created.

When I asked him to send me a copy he responded with that url only 20 minutes after the files was posted at 10:44 am 12/03/01.

Must be a USR insider. heh

It would be really nice to know what
version of the firmware USR was
offering, so those already carrying
some code, could know if it was
old or not, and so if they should try
upgrade.

Anyone out there know the version number?

After all of the grief I went through I ended up giving the modem away to my brother-in-law.

I found the throughput went out the window when the upgrade was applied.

I have decided to stick to my trusty Courier.

I have just upgraded my 5610A and its working fine.My ISP does not have V.92 yet but it is coming soon.I have noticed a small improvement in my V.90 connection.
Although I am lucky to have a very good connection anyway.I easily optain a average of 48K on my downloads.I did have problems with my first 5610A.It had a problem negotiating a connection, but I called USR and they replaced it.This one seems to work perfectly.

I have had a little experience with this modem (56k performance pro 3cp5610a) and the drivers. The first thing I want to say is that I could never get the original control center program to work with windows ME. But the modem worked fine. Like many other people Control Center would not find the modem. I discovered that the Control Center program itself was at fault when I down loaded the current version being offered for download, it worked like a charm, finding my modem, down loading the flash and it was able to flash the modem. When you flash the modem the old V.90 *.inf driver file will no longer work becouse the new firmware pnp code is different that is why before you restart the machine you must delete the old modem. Also it is worth noting that the new v.92 inf driver file that I talk about below will not work with the old V.90 pre-flash firmware. I have checked and when you down load the new Control Center the new *.inf driver file is located in "C:\Program Files\U.S. Robotics\ControlCenter\xx561001\up5610dr.zip" notice that the last folder is zipped. It must be unzipped to the curent directory or to a floppy before the driver install procedure will see the new inf files. It contains two folders named "drivers" both contain the same files im not sure why, but they both contain the new inf files for the uprgraded modem. The simple way to do this is to extract the files to a floppy and direct the computer to the floppy when it asks you for the drivers, after you download the new Control Center, flash the modem, delete the old modem and restart the machine. Before I flashed to the new V.92 firmware I could never get better than a 36000 connection, now I never get less than 40000. Thats not big but it is noticable. The modem continues to work great.

I wish the heck I had seen this posting before upgrading
my 5610a.

My modem is basicaly useless now. It can't download any more
faster than 1.9Kilobytes per second .

And USr never made any warnings that the upgrade will totaly
damage the modem.

Usr has the 5610b modem drivers now up at:

ftp://ftp.usr.com/usr/dl07/USR5610bW.exe

As usr states a v.92 flashed 5610 a modem is now called a 5610b modem.

I agree it works on XP but for every other windows OS and linux the modem is now nothing more than 14.4k..

We might as well be using a commodore 64.

The more annoying part in the USR's control center does not
or offer to backup your original firmware.

In the past week USr has posted 2 additional verison of thier v92 firmware. So USr can't tell me that it can't re-flash it's v90 firmware.

I just wish some one could some how get thier hands on an unflashed 5610a modem and some usr program to make a backup of the flash bios.

I won't bore any one with the details. Let's just say the more help USR tech sup sent me the worst it got.

Come to think of it! The Commodore Vic-modem probably is more reliable. The Vic-modem had a switch that you flipped manually in order to go on-line. At least it wouldn't drop the connection like the 5610A.

Long live the Vic-modem!

I upgraded my 5610A to 5610B and V.92.

I have not had any problems or issues related to the upgrade (my problems with this modem are in the "garbled noise" thread). In fact, my modem seems to operate slightly faster (higher average throughput) and slightly more stable (less retrains that fallback).

Here are some tips that will help out . This posting is on the other forums56 5610 problems thread as well.

Also here is the USR /3com URL for the 5610 series modems
V.92 WIndows Drivers.

ftp://ftp.usr.com/usr/dl07/USR5610bW.exe

***********************************************************

Here are a few hints we've found and tested that have solved
several of the problems. We've also included below an excerpt from USR Tech support on how to disable some of the V92 features in the firmware/modem.

We recomend cut and pasting the USR Init string as they sugest.
----------------------------------------------------------

Part #1: Before you make any adjustments in Control center goto the "RESET" section and reset the "hardware" option then return to your "Call control" section .

You realy only need so this once after you've installed new firmware or changed your modem drivers.

----------------------------------------------------------
"Call control" section in control center.

Part #2: When in Control center and you "save to modem" a % done status window pops up and shows you blue bars counting to fill the window upto a full or 100% complete. Then another window pops up and sais OK (button you can click to finish up).

Most of the time this bar only goes through once when you click "save to modem"

Right away try clicking "save to modem" again and watch that % bar.. It should repeat it self 3 times (the % bar wil fill up to full or 100% then clear and repeat a total of 3 times. Then % bar will disapear and the "OK" button will appear.

This 3 pass/cycle % bar is the correct save. If only one pass is seen then your new modem settings are incomplete and you modem will not work properly at all.

#3: Using Control center get the latest firmware.. The last one which was xxx_52245.dmf was nothing but a trial version USR sent out .. SHEEESH!

The latest version goes be the name "0056100x_5_22_46.dmf"

This version from what we can tell has windows 9.X, ME, and 2000 compatability built in.
------------------------------------------------------------

Part #4: The v.92 deactivation init strings from USR Tech support; (Between the ===== lines)

============================================================
>If you are experiencing problems connecting with your V.92 modem you can try the following:
>
>Go into the control panel, double click on Modems. Then Highlight the US Robotics modem and click properties. Then click on the connection tab and hit the advanced button. After the advanced button you should see a box that is captioned “extra settings”.
> In that line Put the following:
+PIG=1 +PMH=1 +PQC=3
>
============================================================

Part#5: For those who have flashed the xxx_5245.dmf then flashed the 52246.dmf you'll notice that the PCM up/downstream menu now has both settings bars at 33.6 instead os 56k and 48k. For some odd reson this has poped up. Our results are rather odd when PCM is active. If any one else cares to test this. Please do so and post your results.

Personaly we find leaving this PCM off works fine . Testing
on a v92 ISP does show a 4.2Kps upload speed..

-----------------------------------------------------------

This + our tricks above have returned some of our connection and download speed. As well as solved most of the dial up
conneciton problems.

Please re-read part #2 as it's one of the main problems with Control center and the 5610x USR modem series.

If more of an explanation is needed feel free to post a request.

I wish I had never heard of V.92. I also upgraded my husbands Performance Pro modem and now it is a piece of junk. I really think that usr should tell you that you can't go back to the original and that a lot of people are having problems once they upgrade. My husband races online and now he can't stay connected and his connection is very unstable. Usr needs to send us new modems.
