cantgetcable Tl Posts: 14 USA	Posted - 2/11/2006 10:04:48 AM hello! I have had the same problem with 2 usr modems. it usually occurs when playing multiplayer games (mohaa). I get disconnected at the worst times,randomly. but the real problem is when i reconnect...sometimes the modem will reconnect at 2.4 kbps or slower...normal connect speeds in the sticks here are 26400 kbps.restarting the computer doesnt help. resetting, turning off and on the modem doesn't help.the only way i have been able to reset the modem so far has been to either roll back the drivers, or reflash the modem. it takes a considerable amount of time to do this. it does not happen if i am surfing the web..no problems..downloading updates or files..no problem..i have contacted usr support about it to no avail..i contacted my isp..no help either. this is a new usr 5686e with current drivers and latest rom flash. the previous modem i replaced was a 5610b performance pro. it would also get stuck in the 2.4 kbps speed. details: mobo gigabyte titan amd 3000+ at 2.26 ghz 768 mb ram modem settings current= 33800 compression on flowcntrl hardware port speed 33800 compression xon/xoff fifo buffers max isp sbcyahoo the first indication of a problem is the net cable unplugged icon flashes at the bottom of the screen. I play mostly mohaa thru the game or thru gamespy. anyone else have this problem? (i also have a netodragon winmodem that doesn't have this problem...but is too slow to play games with) Bill J Cunningham

v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA	Posted - 2/15/2006 11:20:02 PM It would be more helpful if you post the post-call diagnostics - this you get by issuing ati6i11y11 after you are disconnected, using Hyperterminal connected directly to modem COM port - www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp Some of the diag info in the modem log is coded & is not decoded/displayed. Would still recommend adding extra initialization string to disable V.92/V.90 so that modem only tries to connect at V.34 speeds since you can't get 56k-rates; The 2400bps connect in modem log has entry right before connection indicating the connection was attempting to be cancelled (aborted) - either user hit cancel or perhaps you have more conflicting software attempting to connect to net automatically? The modem log indicates the remote modem hung up on you (lost cd) for disconnects, but the modem's post-call diagnostics would be better to use for this troubleshooting.... Aloha! Richard.

Disable V.92/V.90 via init string should result in better/more stable/quicker handshake connect time. The line in the ati16 response: Disconnect Reason is DTR dropped means that your computer terminated the call. If you do the same diagnostics after you are disconnected, what is the disconnect reason? (If it continues to say DTR dropped, something on your PC, possibly other software or conflicting auto-connect settings may be the cause.) The diagnostics show that your modem request 1 retrain - retrains are bad as no data can pass for significant period of time while modem is retraining. You need to check this on a series of calls - if they all show retrains, you should try limiting your max connect speed to 26.4k. www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-linklimit.asp Aloha! Richard.
cantgetcable Tl Posts: 14 USA	Posted - 2/19/2006 10:34:34 AM I have read a lot of the posts about the usr 5610a (b) and the 5686 ext. like other people, i bought this modem for game play improvement. it works great for that for a short time....then i lose connection for no apparent reason. i have tried a lot of the suggestions but with limited success. if nothing else, what is the current recommendation for a quality gaming modem? The i11 screen you post shows very low receive signal level Recv/Xmit Level (-dBm) 35/10 (higher numbers = lower signal levels - -35dbm is VERY low) The problems you describe are most likely either (a) poor telephone line or (b) bad modem. If (a), you may have trouble with almost any modem. How do normal voice telephone calls sound? Have you tried connecting the modem directly to the demarc? www.modemsite.com/56k/demarc.asp I am not fond of the later versions of USR modems; I would suggest softmodem using Agere SV92P chipset as a very good (and inexpensive) modem. cantgetcable Tl Posts: 14 USA	Posted - 2/20/2006 11:27:03 PM Ok iv'e had it with this pos. today i get home fire it up and ....2.4 kbps.. and the reset feature in usr's control panel doesn't do anything...same with the 5610b i had. i am using my netodragon el cheapo to RELIABLY post this reply. USR has clearly orphaned their modem line, as the latest updates are old already...thanks for all the help, ans i will begin looking to try another brand, hopefully one with no non working and ineffective and S.l.o.w. control panel.
